Last Sunday I dragged a lawn chair outside onto the blacktop driveway with the intention of soaking up the afternoon warmth. Rubbing sunscreen between my palms, I smeared it across my nose and cheeks, cupping it beneath my chin and down my neck. I tipped my head back and squinted up at the blue sky through my smeary sunglasses.

On days like this, I feel sure life is a fountain. ~Christie Purifoy

I inhaled and exhaled slowly, taking the time to complete each breath before rushing for the next. Summer is coming, I said to no one. On my lap, I held my already-worn and marked up copy of Christie Purifoy’s book, Roots & Sky, A Journey Home in Four Seasons. It’s a book I keep carrying around, in my purse, in the various rooms of my house. A clean copy currently sits on my guest bed, a gift for the next overnighter who comes to the Streamside house. It’s a book I can’t shake, not that I’m trying…

We talk a lot about home here at GraceTable, we reflect and dream and imagine ways that we can make others feel at home in our physical space, as well as our emotional space. We talk about opening our doors and our hearts and our minds to God’s dreams for us–what that journey looks like–the good, bad and ugly. Roots & Sky is like a quilt that tells an exquisite story about all of these things, and hems the whole imperfectly beautiful thing in hope. This is why we have selected this book for the 2nd annual Summer Reading Book Club.

This is the story of a kingdom come.~Christie Purifoy

Three weeks ago, I had the delight of sharing a room with Christie at the Festival of Faith and Writing. I brought with me a chocolate sour cream bundt cake, drizzled with ganache and several dollops of homemade peanut butter frosting.  I was being hospitable, yes, but also, I needed a favor (wink). In my trunk I carried with me 6 copies of her book that I wanted to giveaway to 6 of you–and I wanted her to sign all of them.

Christie needed no bribing, as she generously agreed to sign each one, and all before she’d tasted the cake.

I always look forward to summer-its like a free ticket to read as much as I want. The longer days and extended porch time may be the reason! It’s also the time.of the year I get caught up on the list of ‘long to reads’ that builds up during the rest of the year and it can include anything from aesthetics and theology to history and cookbooks. Bring on summer!!

I have found myself giving copies of this book away to people. It’s exquisite.

My favorite reading genre for summer is quirky fiction – something like Jasper Fforde’s The Eyre Affair or Douglas Coupland’s Girlfriend in a Coma.

I don’t have a particular favorite summer reading genre. Being a newer mom of two I’m mainly just working to make time to read. I’m currently working on ‘All the Light We Cannot See’ by Anthony Doerr and I would love to win a copy or ‘Roots & Sky’ because I’ve been so interested in reading it since I heard about it and learned of Christie from Emily Freeman. It sounds like a book that will be refreshing to my souls at this particular time in my life.

Winning this book would be a blessing. One of my favorite things is to read Christian books then pass them to all the women God has placed in my life. I end up buying the book as a gift for birthdays and Christmas and Mother’s Day and such. It is always a gift that keeps on giving. Thank you for this very intellectual yet creative blog. God Bless
